Concrete Refinishing

With concrete coatings becoming more and more popular in residential areas across the country, there has never been a better time to install or update your home’s look. Whether you’re remodeling and looking for an alternative to tile, needing to update the existing gray floors in your garage or basement, or wanting to clean and refinish an ancient driveway, coated concrete is an ideal way to give your home an affordable and customizable makeover. If new flooring is on your wishlist, call the professionals at Paul’s Picture Perfect Painting to request an estimate today!

Thanks to the science behind modern finishes, concrete floors can now mimic the effects of countless colors, patterns, and designs. This can include anything from basic colored concrete to replications of more expensive flooring such as marble, granite, hardwood, and even mosaic tile. If creative patterns are more your style, proper staining can create swirls, ripples, or even the impression of flowing water. If you prefer sleek and eye-catching, metallic epoxies can give your floors a buffed shine that will catch the attention of visitors for years to come. Modern concrete coatings are so durable that a new coat of sealer every few years is often all you need to keep your floors in pristine condition for decades.

The phrase “coated concrete” can refer to any cured concrete that has been treated with liquid or semi-liquid material. This layer can give concrete a variety of colors and sheens, meaning that it can be personalized to match any decor. While the term “coated” can include primers and cleaners, it typically refers to at least one of the following:

Acid-Based & Water-Based Stains

Acid-based stains are comprised of water mixed with hydrochloric acid and acid-soluble metallic salts. These ingredients react with the calcium hydroxide (also called hydrated lime) that sits beneath the concrete’s outer surface. The hydrochloric acid seeps into the concrete, carving a path for the metallic salts to enter the inner layers. Once past the outer surface, the metallic salts and the concrete produce a chemical reaction that leaves a permanent color similar to stone, wood grain, or metal.

On the other hand, water-based stains are usually made from pigments and acrylic polymers. Water-based stains are a newer technology and do not produce color with a chemical reaction, meaning that they are often considered safer and more consistent. These stains come in a variety of colors and often produce a more vibrant finish compared to acid-based stains. Both stain varieties, however, protect the concrete from all types of damage, including sunlight and mildew.

Concrete Dyes

Concrete dye comes in two forms: solvent and water-based. Solvent-based dyes create an even, uniform finish, while water-based dyes leave a unique marbled pattern. These dyes seep into the concrete just like stains, but because of their smaller particle size, they can soak in much farther and leave a deeper, richer color. The main drawback to dyes is that they do not protect against UV rays and will therefore fade in direct sunlight.

Tinted Sealers

Tinted sealers create a glossy finish that suspends particles of color within. These sealers come in both water-based and solvent-based forms, both of which produce a semi-translucent finish. Water-based sealer, however, yields a more transparent finish that can be used a blank canvas for colored particles or other effects. Tinted concrete sealer comes in premixed containers, but it can also be custom-mixed in order to create a unique and memorable coating.
